The Education Quality for All (EQUALL) project is working to get more children in deprived areas into school, helping teachers to teach reading more effectively, and equipping local education officers to improve schools in their district.
EQUALL was designed to support the Government’s Education Sector Plan, which emphasises increasing access to and improving quality of basic education. Funding for EQUALL is provided by USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development).
The project began operations in July 2004 in five districts in Ghana, working in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and the Ghana Education Service (GES). Project activities have since expanded to 20 districts and benefited thousands of schoolchildren and hundreds of communities.
"We are coming at educational improvement from all angles: addressing management, policymakers, teachers, out-of-school children, literacy improvement. There are many pieces to this project, but we tie it all together with a tight focus on literacy. Reading has been identified as the critical issue to education quality in Ghana."
