What We Do: Open and Distance Learning
Success
More than 20,000 teachers took part in and upgraded their skills to become certified teachers during the period 2004-2008.
Teachers Need Training and Support
Distance education is one of the government’s strategies for training untrained teachers in Ghana. EQUALL supported the distance learning program of the Teacher Education Division to upgrade the qualifications of untrained teachers in areas which find it difficult to attract and retain teachers. Open and Distance Learning activities worked with the three northern regions and Afram Plains in the Eastern Region.
Open and Distance Learning is a win-win activity for all involved in the program:
- untrained teachers upgrade their skills and become certified teachers
- schools and communities retain teachers
- Ghana Education Service achieves goal of providing trained teachers for underserved areas
- EQUALL meets its goal of improving access to basic education for rural communities.
EQUALL assistance involved:
- strengthening the assessment and accreditation process of the Teacher Education Division, including developing assessment tools and training
- organising and funding writers’ workshops for tutors to write training modules.
More than 120 teachers from the Complementary Education Program and Community Support Teacher program have been supported and registered in the untrained teacher diploma program.
