What We Do: Special Education Needs (SEN)
Success
EQUALL supported the introduction of inclusive education training and tools into all schools in five pilot districts.
Inclusive Education for All
The Special Education Needs activity of EQUALL supported the Special Education Division of the Ghana Education Service to develop a strategy for increasing the levels of inclusive education in Ghana in five districts in Ghana. In addition, the Special Education Needs program conducted a study to estimate prevalence rates of learners with special needs in Ghana.
Training
The Special Education Division of GES and EQUALL collaborated to:
- conduct a study to identify learners with special needs and where they live in Ghana
- develop teacher training materials in special education
- restructure teacher education courses at training college level to take account of disability
- develop tools and train teachers in assessment and screening of learners with special needs
- train a set of master trainers (3) from each circuit area (or sub-district) on inclusive education strategies drawing on the UNESCO pack for inclusive education and the expertise of PACE Center at Yale University
- build awareness through media-based approaches on issues of disability and inclusiveness
- encourage District Assemblies and other agencies to build schools to support inclusive, child-friendly education.
