EQUALL’s literacy programs focus on:

Literacy Standards and Milestones

EQUALL worked with the Ghana Education Service to develop literacy standards and milestones which give primary school teachers practical strategies to track and assess pupils’ progress.

Reading Improvement in Primary Education

The Reading Improvement in Primary Education Program works with schools in 20 districts. The program offers support with literacy instructional strategies where pupils learn to read and write first in their mother tongue. The program also trains teachers how to implement quality monitoring systems to assess the progress of their pupils.

Success

A comparison of results from a 2007 National Education Assessment shows that while national mean scores for English and Maths declined at Primary 3, the mean scores of EQUALL pupils for English and Maths improved.

Culture of Reading Campaign

The Culture of Reading Campaign used social marketing techniques to create a conducive environment for reading among adults and children in the South Tongu District in the Volta Region.

Literacy Support Initiative

EQUALL assisted the Ghana Education Service (GES) in developing and producing a comprehensive literacy program delivered to all schools in Ghana. Activities involved producing instructional materials to teach literacy and conducting a national teacher training program.
