Literacy Standards and Milestones

The idea of the Literacy Standards and Milestones has been used for other subject areas in the curriculum. e.g. Mathematics

The EQUALL project and the Ghana Education Service (GES) jointly developed oral, reading and writing standards and milestones for primary schools in Ghana. Teachers need a guide that clearly defines what students should know and be able to do at all stages of learning to read and write.

Standards state what pupils should know and milestones state steps along the way to reaching the standard. With standards and milestones teachers are able to track learners’ progress and plan appropriate lessons. EQUALL also provided training to equip GES to develop standards and milestones for other subjects.

The Literacy Standards and Milestones were introduced first as a pilot, in Mfantseman District in the Central Region of Ghana.
