Literacy Standards and Milestones
Success
The idea of the Literacy Standards and Milestones has been used for other subject areas in the curriculum. e.g. MathematicsThe EQUALL project and the Ghana Education Service (GES) jointly developed oral, reading and writing standards and milestones for primary schools in Ghana. Teachers need a guide that clearly defines what students should know and be able to do at all stages of learning to read and write.
Standards state what pupils should know and milestones state steps along the way to reaching the standard. With standards and milestones teachers are able to track learners’ progress and plan appropriate lessons. EQUALL also provided training to equip GES to develop standards and milestones for other subjects.
Additional benefits of the standards and milestones include:
- helping teachers see if lessons are effective so they can make adjustments
- tracking what pupils should learn next
- offering a basis to report on pupils’ progress to parents and others
- providing scoring formats for assessing pupils’ work.
Development Team
The Literacy Standards and Milestones were produced by a team of English and Ghanaian languages staff from the following agencies:
- Curriculum Research Development Division
- Teacher Education Department of the University of Education
- University of Cape Coast
- Wesley Training College
- Berekum Training College.
The Literacy Standards and Milestones were introduced first as a pilot, in Mfantseman District in the Central Region of Ghana.
