Quality Education Needs Strong Management
Improving children’s school performance depends on strong management at both the district and school levels in Ghana. The Education Management Improvement (EMI) program focuses on strengthening education management capacity at the district level.
Custom-made Training for Districts
The Education Management Improvement program tailors management training and technical support to meet the specific needs of EQUALL’s 20 partner districts.
Success
Over 1000 District Education Office staff have been trained using EQUALL’s education management practices.The EQUALL team works as facilitators with the staff of each district’s Education Office to identify its specific needs in training and technical assistance. A jointly developed Management Training Plan identifies the district’s needs and education objectives. This determines the training and technical assistance visits that EQUALL provides.
Management training covers all aspects of district planning and management areas, for example:
- Planning strategies
- Budgeting strategies
- Conducting School Performance Appraisal Meetings
- Training for School Management Committees and PTAs
- Training and monitoring of untrained teachers
- Effective strategies and approaches to supervision
- Building a school monitoring and evaluation system
- How to collect and interpret monitoring and evaluation data
- Use of computer software programs
- Effective strategies to improve teacher and pupil performance
- Training of teachers in literacy instructional strategies
Where a district requires capacity building beyond the scope of EMI, the team facilitates links with national Ghana Education Service expertise or USAID partners or other sources.
EQUALL has observed a clear link between districts whose management performance improved over the years in the program and improved school and pupil performance.
