Where We Work

EQUALL districts in Ghana

The EQUALL project works in partnership with 27 districts in Ghana. There are 170 districts, which fall under 10 regions in Ghana’s administrative structure. Most districts consist of small towns and rural settlements, where the majority of people are subsistence farmers or fishermen.

Rural Ghana maintains the rich and vibrant culture for which the country is known. Ghana’s numerous ethnic groups have spawned a profusion of colourful and diverse traditions in clothing, dance, festivals, foods and drumming.

However, most rural districts are classified as ‘deprived areas’ and underserved by social services from electricity and clean water to poor roads and lack of health facilities. These harsh conditions make it difficult to attract trained teachers and qualified education managers. Thus basic education suffers. Much of EQUALL’s work is in deprived districts.
