The mission of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is to improve communication through a better understanding of language and culture. CAL began with a mandate to improve the teaching of English around the world and to conduct research on language learning and teaching. It was established in 1959 with a Ford Foundation grant and became a pioneer in professional development for language teachers and materials development for English as a second language.
Today, CAL is a major contributor in the fields of literacy and foreign language education and language policy. CAL continues to conduct research on language and strives to solve language and literacy problems.
