“Before I entered the Complementary Education Program I followed my mother to farm, as a girl to plant yam because I am the first born. I also went with my peers to fetch water when we were at home. I did not attend school because my father died when I was still a small girl and my mother could not afford to send me to school.
“After the Complementary Education Program I went to primary school and got integrated into P3. I felt happy and proud that I was able to read and write and I wanted to be in formal school. I was able to read letters for my mother and read hospital cards, prescriptions, receipts and fertilizer instructions. My mother allowed me to go to formal school because she saw that I could help her through reading and writing and that I could still farm even better after attaining education. Now I have finished primary 6 and I hope to go on to Junior High School.”
