“The difference between private schools and public schools in Kwahu West District is the ability of pupils in private schools to read fluently,” says George Appiah, chairperson of the school management committee of Amanfrom DA Primary School.

Appiah, already in his seventies and blind, says EQUALL’s Education Management Improvement workshops strengthened his skills to support literacy. He volunteers to teach children, helps with homework, and covers for teachers absent from school.

In a district reading competition funded with EQUALL’s District Incentive Grant, Amanfrom Primary School took several first and second place positions. “Now,” says Appiah, “the children are reading, so parents have started withdrawing their wards from private schools to bring to our school.”
