Heduvor’s Presidential Ambition

Many children are learning to read in their own language in EQUALL’s Reading Improvement in Primary Education. One such learner is Wander Heduvor, a 14-year-old pupil who could not read when he transferred to Sogakope L–A Primary C School, one of EQUALL’s participating schools in South Tongu District. Within one year, Wander was reading aloud in front of a large church congregation. He recounts his story:

“I could not read anything when I was tested at Sogakope L. A. Primary ‘C’ to enrol as a pupil. I was therefore asked to go to class 1, which I readily accepted. I was determined to improve upon my performance, so l learnt the eight sentences which my class teacher taught us in Ewe. These help me a great deal when I am reading in Ewe. Today I can read the Ewe Bible and any Ewe book.”

“One day I walked up to my Sunday School teacher at Global Church and told him I could read the Holy Bible. He couldn’t believe it, so he tried me and I read perfectly well. He shook my hands and lined me up to read to the larger congregation. I read Ephesians 6:4 to the amazement of all. They all clapped for me and I was very happy. My reflections on this always spur me on to learn harder and to succeed. My ambition is to become the president of Ghana in future.”
