It was when parents saw Primary 1 pupils reading that they pinned their hopes on EQUALL’s Reading Improvement in Primary Education program. Pupil performance and school conditions had been poor before Wadie Adwumakese Methodist Primary School joined the EQUALL program in 2005. Many parents in the rural community in Kwabre District (Ashanti Region) withdrew their children from the school.
A newly elected PTA chairman, Stephen Ampaabeng, rallied the community to buy classroom furniture and renovate a teacher’s bungalow. The house was promptly allocated to the class 1 teacher. Ampaabeng explains, “The community decided that due to the importance of the EQUALL program, the P1 teacher in charge of the reading improvement program should stay very close to the school.”
According to one community leader, “Today, the kids come to school very early, before school starts, to read. The teacher is always on time.” Now Methodist Primary is attracting pupils from other schools. Adds Ampaabeng, “Parents realise that our class 1 pupils can read better and they exude a lot of confidence. Thanks to EQUALL for the wonderful work they are doing in our community.”
